Sunterra RE marks an important milestone in Bulgaria's energy transformation with the commissioning of major battery energy storage systems (BESS) at the Galabovo Solar, Kaloyanovo Solar, and Karlovo Solar photovoltaic power plants.
The permits obtained from the competent authorities certify that the complexes meet all technical requirements and safety standards, allowing them to commence full commercial operation.
Technical parameters of the facilities:
- Total installed capacity: 150 MW
- Total capacity: over 300 MWh
- Total number of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries: 77
The facilities are connected to the existing transmission grid infrastructure, with the energy storage systems managed by state-of-the-art operational and commercial management platforms.
„This represents more than a technological success—it marks a step towards a more sustainable future for Bulgaria“, says Emil Shopov, CEO of Sunterra RE. "With the commissioning of these facilities, we are not only confirming our leading role in the Bulgarian energy sector, but also contributing to the stability of the energy system."
The project was completed in less than a year. Funding was secured through own resources, project financing, and funds under the Bulgaria’s National recovery and resilience plan.
The facilities will play a key role in the integration of renewable energy sources into the energy system and will contribute to the achievement of climate goals in the region. The investment is a strong testament to Sunterra RE’s expertise in building modern energy solutions.
